The Institute of Music “G.B. Pergolesi” is one of the best known institutions in Ancona and its area. It was founded in 1924 by a music coterie gathered around the figures of Count Liverotto Ferretti and Federico Marini (who was Pietro Mascagni’s student). It developed during the period soon after World War II when it became the principal centre for a musical education not only in the town but in the whole Province (district) of Ancona too. Many young students began their music studies here and then went on studying for higher degrees in other conservatories of the Marches Region.

After many years from its foundation the partners of the music institute, the Town Council and the District Council succeeded in getting the official acknowledgement of a state school. In 2001, October 31st, the Ministry of Education brought in a law by decree according to which the Institute was officially recognised as a State School of Music like all the State Music Conservatories for the following courses:
Guitar, clarinet, accordion, flute, percussion instruments, piano and complementary subjects, (general music culture, history of music, theory and solfeggio, complementary piano), music ensemble for wind instruments.

Now, as a consequence of the law n°508/1999 on rearrangement of school programmes and of the administrative functions of the Italian Conservatories, a new phase is opening in the history of the Institute of Music “G.B. Pergolesi”. The Institute is updating its organisational and educational structure. Its aim is an equalization to European teaching standards to provide a realistic preparation for the diversity of skills and aptitudes needed for the career of a modern performing musician: a career that will require specialisation on one hand, and a range of versatility on the other. The current director devotes a special attention to the study and application of the new technologies.

Today, the Institute of Music “G.B. Pergolesi” has got a class provided with a network of personal computers and an Elettroacoustic Music Laboratory provided with the latest instruments, at its disposal.
This laboratory can also record concerts and produce its own CDs and DVDs.
